SSI is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. This program is also designed to help individuals whose physical or mental disabilities have become so severe that they can no longer work.
Young adults between the ages of 18 and 22 who are disabled may be eligible for benefits if their parents receive Social Security retirement benefits, SSDI, or are deceased.
These benefits are provided to widows or widowers over the age of 50 who develop disabilities within seven years of their spouses’ death and meet other specific requirements.
